Why Sparta Continues to Inspire My Writing
When people discover my books, one of the first questions they ask is why I write so much about Sparta. The answer is not as simple as an interest in ancient warfare or famous battles. What has always fascinated me about Sparta is the system behind it. While much of popular culture focuses on legendary warriors and dramatic last stands, I have always been more interested in understanding how an entire society was built around discipline, obedience, sacrifice, and collective purpose.
The deeper I studied Spartan history, the more I realized that Sparta's true strength was never found in individual heroes. It came from its ability to create a culture where the needs of the group were often placed above the needs of the individual. Their leaders understood that armies do not succeed because of a few extraordinary men. They succeed because ordinary people are willing to work together, trust one another, and remain committed to a common purpose even when circumstances become difficult.
That idea became the foundation for the Spartan Command series. Each book allowed me to explore a different aspect of Spartan society, from leadership and discipline to fear, authority, endurance, and emotional control. My goal has never been to glorify Sparta or turn it into something it was not. Instead, I have tried to understand how such a system functioned, what it demanded from the people who lived within it, and why its influence continues to be discussed thousands of years later.
What has surprised me most is how strongly readers have responded to these themes. Over time, what began as a single book has grown into an expanding catalog that now reaches readers through major retailers, bookstores, and libraries around the world. Seeing readers move from one title to another has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my writing journey. It tells me that people are interested not only in Sparta itself but in the larger questions surrounding leadership, discipline, power, and human behavior.
As I continue building my catalog, I plan to expand beyond Sparta while remaining focused on the same core ideas that inspired me from the beginning. Rome is a natural next step because it faced many of the same challenges while developing its own systems of organization, discipline, and control. Future books will continue exploring the structures that shaped civilizations and the principles that allowed some societies to endure while others disappeared.
At its core, history has never been just about dates, battles, or famous names. It is about understanding why people behaved the way they did, how institutions gained power, and what lessons can still be learned from those experiences today. Those questions continue to drive my research, my writing, and my passion for history.
I am grateful to every reader who has supported my work, followed the Spartan Command series, and joined me on this journey. The catalog continues to grow, and I believe the most interesting stories are still ahead.
